History of the McKinlock Post Foundation
For more than 100 years the American Legion has served its communities, states, and the nation. Veterans have joined Posts throughout the country. Men and women who have served the nation through military service have continued the tradition of commitment.
McKinlock Post 264, serving Lake Bluff and Lake Forest, continues to serve in this manner. The Post’s commitments are to veterans, active-duty personnel, children and the community.
In October of 2003 members of the Post recognized that Post 264 needed a permanent fund. For 86 years the Post had been living year to year, fully dependent upon proceeds from Lake Forest Day to meet its charitable needs. Additionally, since 1935 the Post maintains our Post home at 801 N. McKinley, Lake Forest.
Therefore, the McKinlock Post Foundation was created to ensure that our work could continue. The members also recognized that other Foundations were much more likely to be able to donate to another Foundation.
An application was made to the IRS and on May 18, 2004 the McKinlock Post Foundation was accepted as a 501 (c) (3) organization, EIN: 20-0468523. Since then, the Foundation has grown year by year, mostly through a year-end appeal. Our Board of Directors has five members, four of whom are Post members and three of these are Past Commanders of the Post.
Each year the Foundation underwrites between three to five college scholarships to graduating high school seniors. We are pleased to assist our students as they pursue higher education.
In order to continue to serve, now and into the future, your help is greatly appreciated. Please do this by making your donation to the McKinlock Post Foundation. At present the donations will go to the Veteran’s Memorial Monument at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
